Woodgrain finishes offer a simple way to introduce warmth and character into washrooms and changing rooms without compromising the durability these demanding environments require. Combining the appearance of natural timber with materials designed for high-traffic use, they remain a popular specification across education, leisure and commercial projects.
The look of timber with practical performance
While natural timber creates an inviting aesthetic, it is rarely suited to busy washrooms. Constant exposure to moisture can cause wood to swell, warp and deteriorate over time, while maintaining a hygienic surface becomes increasingly difficult once water penetrates.
Woodgrain-effect SGL panels provide an effective alternative. SGL replicates the appearance of timber while delivering the robust, wipe-clean performance expected in commercial washroom environments. The result is a finish that feels warm and considered, while remaining practical for everyday use.
Designed for demanding environments
School washrooms and changing rooms experience constant daily use, regular cleaning and the knocks associated with busy environments. Materials specified for these spaces need to balance appearance with long-term durability and ease of maintenance.
Woodgrain finishes help soften the overall look of a washroom without introducing materials that are less suited to wet environments. Used alongside contrasting colours and complementary finishes, they allow designers to create spaces that feel welcoming while maintaining the robust performance required for high-traffic applications.
Woodgrain in practice
Heronshaw School, a primary school in Walnut Tree, Milton Keynes and part of the Inspiring Futures through Learning multi-academy trust, selected Trovex's Junior and Essential cubicle systems in a Grey Maple woodgrain finish for its washrooms.
The Grey Maple finish has been applied exclusively to the cubicles and duct panelling, while the cubicle doors feature a contrasting Uniform Blue finish to create a bright, engaging space. A Smarttrough vanity unit completes the changing room, demonstrating how carefully selected finishes can deliver a practical environment with a warmer, more contemporary appearance.
